Frame Free

Sunday 25 April 2010 @ 12:37 pm

Frame Free is a plugin to remove any frame created by Digg, Facebook, Google Images, Ow.ly and any other third party services. The plugin is inserting some Javascript in your HTML head section to remove the annoying frame such as DiggBar.

When you add this to your blog the visitor will still see the Digg Toolbar for a second or so and then it will be removed.

It has recently become a trend for top sites to show your blog inside a frame.

This is an old trick, back in a new form. I’m rather surprised to see it back in use. These sites currently include digg.com, facebook.com, ow.ly links and more!

For example, if you open this link: http://ow.ly/16j5d (assuming its not gotten old and stopped working), you will see the google page rendered with an owly toolbar.

This is done for a number of reasons, but from an SEO standpoint it ONLY benefits the site doing the framing, not you. Because technically you never leave the site issuing the frame, according to Google and other search engines, the visitor was never truly on your site. Now “time on site” for the framing site goes UP, driving up their SEO and you get very little from it. Essentially this is traffic stealing.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to break this behavior, with  a small wordpress plugin called “Frame Free”. This plugin is available under Dashboard -> Plugins -> New Plugin -> Search -> Frame Free (and requires no settings be configured).

That’s it… now reader time on site is YOURS.
