Voip Internet Telephony Explained For The Ordinary Person
By Steve Evans
VoIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol", which must make it one of the most geeky acronyms around, and that is going it some for the IT industry! Given this appalling name, is it any wonder that many people will still gawp at you every time you mention it?

However, for ordinary people simply means a phone system which uses the internet, and only dials out into the traditional fixed line and cell phone (mobile phone) systems when users dial calls to the non-internet public phone system.

VoIP is growing fast, and by the end of 2006 phone service had grown to nearly 5 million households and if anything the take-up by small businesses is even larger. The big seller is that all calls to others through the system to their computers are free. To make this easy all users register their own "names" which are usernames through which the system will "ring" (alert) that person to make a call if they are on-line and have a broadband connection established, anywhere in the world.

VOIP services can be a valuable complement or replacement to land line (analog) telephone services, and low cost handsets are readily available for this system, for the convenience of the user.

Any good broadband connection can be used and cable operators are also offering home phone service using technology.

Users are finding that they can save up to 70% on their monthly phone service costs as soon as they join, and for heavy international call users the figure could be higher.

You can be up and running within minutes of receiving your package from the service provider of your choice. is popular for international calling.

Of course there are some downsides; the support of sending faxes over is still limited, and emergency service coverage is non-existent or unreliable. The internet is required for all services, and there may be an echo or audible delay at times.

Just think of as another cool thing you can do with the Internet. Also, just think of the future when it is pretty much inevitable, due to the domination of the web, that at some future time all telephones will run over the Internet, using this type of system.

VoIP is safe, secure and as reliable as your broadband connection. So, a phone service is not always as reliable or as clear as traditional phone service and much depends upon

the speed of your internet connection. However, it is still very good.

Most service providers provide a secure service by encrypting conversations from your telephone handset (or adapter) and only decrypt it when it enters the 'regular' phone system at their interface in their NOC. However, if security is especially important you should check with prospective service providers before buying the service.

Earthlink, for example, offers new an internet telephony service designed to look and feel like a traditional phone service.

So, why not dump your old-fashioned phone company and pick up VoIP? All good broadband connections at speeds above around 100k (both ways) will give you quality VoIP.
